Default Anouncement by Volvo re: ETM

Hi all.

Just found this on the 'Volvo UK' web site.

ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) Information
As Volvo's reputation is founded on safety, Volvo never hesitates to launch world wide safety recall campaigns when they are required. However, Volvo does not believe that ETM malfunction is a safety-related issue and this view is shared by the authorities in the UK.

However, Volvo is aware that some customers may be experiencing symptoms of an ETM malfunctioną or are concerned about the running of their vehicle and has therefore made a software upgrade and a component clean service available free of charge through approved Volvo dealers.

For clarification and to avoid unnecessary contact, the potentially affected models are:

1999, 2000, and 2001 model year S60, S70, V70, XC70, C70 and S80 petrol models
2002 model year V70 and S80 non turbo petrol and C70 petrol models
All S60 and V70 bi fuel models
Please note - no diesel models are affected

Regrettably some vehicles may require a new ETM and, in these situations, Volvo makes a contribution towards the cost depending on a vehicle's age and mileage.

Volvo would ask any customer who is concerned about this issue and owns a car listed above, but has not already had the software upgrade, to contact their local Volvo dealer in the first instance or the Volvo Car UK Customer Relations team.

1. An ETM malfunction impacts on the vehicle's emissions levels and can also affect the running of the vehicle. A combination of throttle positioning sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing, and/or inefficient software calibration may cause a warning lamp to light to notify the driver of the malfunction, or may cause uneven idling or the subsequent onset of limp home mode. Limp mode is a built-in safety feature which, while restricting the vehicle to a low speed of between 10 and 30 mph, enables the driver to stay in control of the vehicle and manoeuvre the car to a position of safety rather than come to a sudden halt.

I think this clarifies their position on the ETM problem don't you.
