The roadside assistance was the nearest garage to where the problem showed up which was the middle of nowhere. He suspected the terminal was the problem but it was heading towards dark and he said if it turned out to be something else then Mrs McP and the kids could have lost headlights etc as the battery died on what is a very remote and unwelcoming rural road at night. So he marked it as needing dealer attention and towed it. Fair play to him, I wouldn't want to have run that risk either.
Found out afterwards he's a friend of the in-laws and a very conscientious fellow, so understandable he wouldn't want a more dangerous breakdown on his mind when he could have played it safe.
