The clutch release bearing is only engaged when the clutch pedal is depressed. With the clutch engaged and the car in gear, there should be no noise from the bearing (it's disengaged). Any noise under these circumstances would usually be from the gearbox or final drive. Noise that disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed used to mean that the gearbox layshaft bearings may be noisy - don't know how significant that is for the Volvo gearbox. Maybe check / change the gearbox lube?
