Also just to confirm that other makers do free of charge recalls.

I used to have an E36 BMW, when it was about 5 years old I got a letter saying that they had found a fault with the steering column on that model. I took it in and they replaced it for nothing.

I think this is pretty common practice - the problem here is, as already mentioned, that it's not really a safety issue (which is why they do it - to avoid lawsuits) but a customer service one.

I get the points about it being unsafe if it happens on the motorway though - it's just not as bad as, say, a faulty airbag sensor causing it to go off when driving.
