This is quiet an interesting issue.
So far I have just travelled slightly over 4500 miles since I got the MY07 D5 and I have not reset the average MPG readout.
The XC90 is averaging 36.3 MPG.
I am possibly fortunate, in that I live in a small town and seldom do short trips. Normally the shortest trip that I do is around 20 miles before switching off the engine.
From the information given so far, it looks like XC90 D5's should not be used in large cities or used for the school run.
