It makes a world of difference to the handling though. My friend has a fiesta ST that's 'slammed' on the ground and although most kids do it to look 'cool' the cars absolutely stick to the road.

Look at all of Volvos BTCC racing cars - They're on the floor. Uncomfortable maybe, but excellent for handling.

I would have mine lower if the roads where I live allowed it, however anything more than a 30mm drop will have my sump ripped off most likely.
