LPG & performance chip upgrades...
Has anyone had any experience with this?
I have a 2001 V70 T5 (less than 65K miles - so not yet run in). I'm thinking about a chip upgrade, but am worried the LPG might not be able to cope with the extra fueling. Worst case scenario I guess it could run weak with the turbo at full boost and melt the bloody engine. It might work fine though. Comments welcomed! J |
I have a T6 chipped and running ok on LPG.
They check the fueling when setting it up so you dont need to worry about that. Go for a BRC kit. |
If you're talking about chipping a car which is already converted to LPG then AFAIK you are going to have to get the gas system retuned to cope with the extra power.
I'd settle on what upgrade you want and then talk to an LPG installer about what needs to be done, most likely just changing the LPG mapping but depending on what's installed there might be a need for bigger injectors or another/higher capacity vaporiser. |
Is it worth chipping these things or does it have a negative effect on the longevity of the vehicle?
I have an auto box & am also a bit concerned a chip might confuse the thing Apreciated, |
The steptronic box should be able to cope with the extra performance from the chip but try to get the annoying default to neutral at idle (common with the Phase 2 autos) dialled out when the chip is done. As John said, you will need to get your LPG specialist to revise the lpg mapping in line with the different parameters resulting from the chip (extra fuelling). Recommend you fit a K&N panel air filter to improve breathing.

I've been having problems recently - fine with normal driving, but it judders on heavy acceleration (MTE remap). It's work in progress for Arun Autogas, but I'd exercise caution with LPG and re-maps from my experience.

Hey Jez - that's a pity that it's giving you problems.
I've got a BRC kit fitted on my phase2 V70 T5 (auto), standard mapping and it swaps over to petrol when I boot it for a long period of time or the gas is low. It does this all automatically and I've never had any issues with my conversion. I too asked my local LPG place (who fitted my lpg) about getting it remapped following a chiptune and he said exactly the same as the advice already given - just bring it back for a quick re-map. |

This used to happen to mine. There is a default setting on the BRC kit that only allows a certain amount of pressure. When you boot it you exceed this pressure limit and it cuts out. |

Petrol can cope somewhat with a weak spark (to a limit obviously), but LPG wont have any of it. Also check the Turbo control valve. I know it sounds strange but I had a stuttering when I floored it, and 500 worth of diagnostics later it turned out to be a 34 quid TCV |
Interesting ref the petrol swap-over - thanks for the tip dave.
I'm due to take it down there for an LPG service in the next few thousand miles so will get them to check/adjust as needed etc. |
