240 ATF change problems :(

Hello again,

As usual nothing ever goes as I plan :)

Hi again all,

Nothing is ever easy..

So I have a '88 240 with AW70 tranny, and am in the process of changing the filter/fluid.

After taking out the sump plug and letting the ATF drain out, I went to loosen the bolt that is on the dipstick pipe - where it attaches to the oil pan. There are two bolts, but looking at the Haynes manual it clearly shows it is the outer bolt that should be loosened - which makes sense.

I started to turn the bolt, it offered about the same resistance as one would expect for an old car, and I was able to undo it without any problems. However upon removing it I can now see that the end of the bolt seems to have sheared off, and remains firmly stuck in place.

This stops me from removing the dipstick pipe and dropping the pan sufficiently to remove the filter. Because the pipe is still in place (it slides around but most definately will not pull out from the pan) I have no idea how I am going to remove the broken end of the bolt as access is so limited.

Also, I managed to pull the pan down enough to have a little look inside, and I can see where the filter is. However on my car there are two rigid pipes which run almost directly over one of the bolts holding the filter in place (the car in the picture in the Haynes manual does not have these 2 pipes) so I am at a loss as to how I will do this once I eventually get the pan off.

HELP!!!!!

:( Thank you from unhappy Alex
