Gear not working
 

I have a strange problem.

I drove 10 miles on the highway. After a break, the engine fault light came on, the car drove as usual, I think it smelled a little burnt maybe. After the next break came starting problems. The starter motor went but the engine died quickly, like it lacked fuel or air problems. After a couple of tries it started and ran as usual. Startup problem came back every time I paused.

The day after the same starting problem and it started as usual after a try but then I couldn't put it in any gear at all. The gear lever felt with the usual resistance when I tried several gears. The clutch felt easier than usual to disengage. There is brake fluid at level (I suppose It have hydraulic clutch). The check engine light has been on the whole time.

All the symptoms don't have to go together but I don't know?
I have changed parts but never dealt with the gearbox or clutch.

Unfortunately cannot read error code, have tried with reader. It is possible to count blinks with a diode in the socket, but I have no experience with that method.

The car is V70 1998 manual gear
Any suggestions what the problem might be?
