How to fix squeaky auto boot struts?

Hello

XC60 2015 here.

For a long while both boot struts have been squeaking when closing the auto tail gate/boot. Opening the boot is mostly quiet.

Can anything be done? Spray? Lube?

Or should I just replace? And if so, is it a straight forward job for a competent DIY’er?

Cheers.

I replaced the struts on Mrs B’s Nissan recently, a very simple and straightforward job. Just don’t expect the tailgate to stay up with just one strut while you change the other one.

Don’t ask me how I know…

(FWIW, I also fitted gas struts to the bonnet of my Skoda, to replace the manual prop)

Thanks. I’ll lookup how much they are to replace.

Forgot to post this earlier. Video with sound of the issue. Is this common to the XC60?

Boot strut squeaking

My XC60 boot struts would regularly squeak and squirts of CRC oil, silicon spray etc would only be a temporary fix. I read somewhere that the attachment points of the struts to the boot lid and body are usually the source of the noise.
I removed the struts, thoroughly greased these end points (a kind of cup and ball arrangement) and put things back together and no more noise in over 6 months which is a record in terms of my ownership (coming up for 10 years soon).

Silicon spray works for a short period but replacement is the only permanent fix I am afraid.

Easy job but remember to brace to boot lid before taking off a strut as one strut doesn’t have the strength to hold the weight of the boot open on its own!!!
