V90 D4 R-Design...
Morning
I have an opportunity through work to opt into a company vehicle, never before in my entire life at hitting nearly 40 next month have i been in this position. Bearing in mind my family and i only have older Volvos, my mum a 2003 V70 D5, we have a 2009 XC90, 1996 850R and my wifes 2007 C70 D5 SE LUX. I never thought id own a brand spanker of a volvo! As we are keen caravaners , currently have a 2008 Abbey Spectrum twin axle weighing in at 1490kg, the XC90 tows with ease, but with a work car i cannot justify to keeping the XC as well. Im looking at a new V90 D4 R-Design, does anyone own one of these and can give some feedback on how it performs when towing etc. Specifically how they ride, perform, does the lack of self levelling mean the V90 sits on its arse (yes i know it depends on how the outfit is loaded) Really interested in peoples views Thanks Rich |

Why not go for a D5/B5 engine?

I used to tow a 1500kg Elddis Affinity 540 with my V90 D4 Inscription - it's an excellent tow car and you won't be left wanting. Go for it would be my recommendation....just don't forget that it'll be about a grand for the semi-electric towbar (but what a great towbar it is!).

I’ve specced the tow pack as part of the deal I’m being very boring and going for white though!! |
I always felt that it looked a little low for my liking, but then I was using an XC60 for towing previously.
That said, it towed really well, always very stable - so it's not as if it appearing low visually was necessarily having a physical impact on the integrity of the outfit. |

I tow a 1500kg Swift Challenger 540 with our V90 D4 R design and have done for the last three years.
It tows really well. The Volvo electrically deployed towbar is brilliant, easy to connect and the trailer lighting test is excellent. The back does sit down quite low when the van is attached, but never so much that the jockey wheel touches the ground (like some outfits I see). We have just come back from two weeks in Scotland (450 miles each way) in one journey. Expect about 25mpg towing, be aware that the Pilot assist and BLIS do not work when there is a trailer attached. The only issue we experienced this year was traction difficulty when trying to get into a CL on a steep gravel slope. Ended up having to take a bit of a run at it. |
Going off on a tangent, does it have the 'boy racer' front seats with adjustable leg supports? If so your concerns regarding towing may pale into insignificance compared with your personal comfort. They are, in my opinion, the most uncomfortable seat Volvo have ever produced. My sincere advice is that before committing you undertake a long journey 100 mile+ to try them out.
