Power pulse system leakage
I began smelling something like fumes and burning in the cabin, and saw smoke from the engine bay. you can imagine my thoughts! I was also hearing an odd abrasive sound like a stone scraping on the brakes and a rattle / loose bolt when driving over an uneven surface. I mentioned this to the dealer (Volvo) and said, they didn't find anything wrong. So I bought an OBD II diagnostic tool that plugs into the car; this ran a test and the result returned an abnormal reading; ECM-P106107 Power pulse system leakage. General fault information. Mechanical fault.
Can anyone help with what this means? |
The power pulse system injects compressed air into the turbine to spin it up faster and reduce turbo lag, the air lines are a weak link in the system and a common fault, the car will drive normally with a leak in the power pulse but they may be a little turbo lag, it is a quick fix to get the leaking pipe replaced.
This fault should not create any smoke and the only noise may be a hissing noise, you may have had a stone trapped between the disc and backing plate making the noise you wear hearing. https://youtu.be/Vf3ucqXJn_A Also see PP in the tags below. |
I've had issues with the powerpulse since June last year. Brought the EML on twice. It's had quite a few parts fitted to it so far under warranty. Absolute pain in the arse. There's a compressor that takes air from the air filter box and stores it at high pressure. There's hoses connecting it all together, so there's multiple points to fail. Hoses are common but mine has had a new compressor and valve.

Silly question, possibly, but does the T5 petrol engine have the powerpulse system as well as the D5?
