SMOKING V70 XC
Hi, I own a '99 V70XC. I bought it six months ago from an independent dealer. It has a comprehensive main dealer service history, 77k miles on the clock, a new turbo fitted on purchase along with a full mechanical breakdown warranty. However, ever since I have owned the car, it has used a lot of oil and it smokes intermittently.
It usually smokes for the first few miles of a journey. But, will continue to smoke if the car is driven from start up around town, etc even when the running temperature increases to normal. The car will also begin to smoke if it is left to idle for some time. The dealer got volvo to check it over. Volvo suggested that nothing is wrong with the vehicle. But, the vehicle has used about 3 litres of oil in 6000 miles, driven on mainly A roads and motorway. Because the Volvo stated this, the dealer wishes now to dismiss the problem. Strangely enough, the vehicle does not always smoke but is using lots of oil. It did have an external oil leak but this was rectified by the dealer even though Volvo said that nothing was wrong with the car. This is why I do not have much faith in the local Volvo dealer. Any ideas of what the fault may be? |
RE: SMOKING V70 XC
It does seem a lot of oil - I'd try another Volvo dealer or Volvo specialist for their opinion or views on Volvo's clean bill of health.
I assume you've checked under the car for leaks, so the stuff is being burnt in the engine - and I bet it smokes mostly on overrun or light throttle, yes? Would more mechanically expert readers confirm that a nicked ring or scratched bore liner would give this kind of trouble? If it is this, then it should be covered under the warranty, BUT only after you've paid to get it properly diagnosed. |

You could check out the replies to a similar smoky problem >V70 Oil burning< from Pat123, I think its in about section 6. Might help?
Good luck Jim |
