Built in telephone
Hi everyone. I have recently purchased a 2001 S80. It has a built in dashboard phone which has a simcard holder underneath the keys. It's really bugging me as i can't get it to work. I have put my tmobile sim in and whilst it recognises that a sim has been placed in it wont work. The phone searches available networks and shows about 4...but when i choose one it gets stuck saying" please wait".I went to the carphone warehouse where a very helpfull guy came out armed with a sim card for all the networks...O2..Vodaphone...Orange etc....and he tried every one and nothing. I have read on a forum somewhere else on the internet that it will only work with a sim1 card which are pre 2003....is this true? Any one know of a remedy? I know Volvo could probably sort it ....but that a last resort as of the cost. Any help greatfully recieved. Also..someone else has had a look for me and claims there is no ariel as the meter in the dash is showing no signal.....but I have also been told they are built in ariels.Any help greatfully recieved. Many thanks Eddie Robinson

Hi Eddie, this may or may not be relevant however on my 2006 S60 D5 i have the same equipment. It currently has a PAYG Orange sim card in it but when i bought it it had a Vodaphone PAYG sim in it. BOTH worked faultlessly but obviously you have highlighted this pre 2003 issue and my car is 2006. I think a trip to Volvo may be needed unless Clan can shed any light and if he does just accept that what he says will be right! Darryl:thumbs_up: |
Built in telephone
Hi Eddie,I have a 2002 v70,with built in phone and have a O2 PAYG and it works fine.

Should be unlocked for any sim...
It could be IMEI blocked (Stolen). Get a network to check the database. To find out the phones IMEI press *#06# |
SIM card
I bought a pay as you go SIM card from Tesco 99p and have had no problems.

Hi Eddie,
Only owned my first Volvo for two days, so am no expert. I tried a Vodaphone sim card and a Virgin card in the dash and both work OK, calling and receiving. Usually my Virgin phone is useless at home, but it worked fine. The Vodaphone card may be 7 or 8 years old but the Virgin is only 5 or 6. My biggest irritation is that to use the same number I will have to keep swapping the card from phone to car. Any alternatives anyone ? Stebbo |
sim
i also used a tesco sim and works fine.
it wouldn't let my net work 3 sim work. v70 2003 d5 regards tony |
If you remember back to the distant past of early mobile phones... does the phrase "dual band" mean anything?
Basically O2 & Vodafone work on one frequency and Orange and T-mobile are on another. The phone in your Volvo is not "Dual band" and so will only work with Voda & O2 (and anyone who "borrows" those networks such as Tesco). Three won't work either as they only allow 3g phones on their network. |
I agree with Smartie - my Orange sim doesn't work in my 04 80 but after my dealer said go for either O2 or Vodaphone I found that a Tesco pre-pay el-cheapo sim works fine.

Just to throw the cat among the pigeons my orange Sim card (pay as u go)has worked fine in my 03 s60 for the last 4 years !!!!

Built-in phone
I have an S60 08 model just bought last week. It came without a SIM card and I have tried Virgin, Tesco and Vodaphone SIM's and none work, I just get the message "Please wait..." and nothing else.

2001 model Page 181 of handbook phone IS dual band. Dual band has nothing to do with the operator all operaters work on tri band systems now, but most phones are still only dual band. Mine works with any sim I stick in it. |
Although mine doesn't respond, all the simcards I tested worked fine except for the 3 network with is 3g only and these phones require a 2g network.

Telephone mystery
I have just bought a 2010 V70 estate.
There is the facility on the centre consul for a mobile phone dial pad but the menu says its not equipt with phone. If I can get this facility up and running it would be useful but I have no idea what is required. Does it need a wired phone or is it hands free. Where does the sim card go and do I needs a holder. I could do with a full explanation if anyone has time. Many thanks in advance. |
