vaccum pump rattle 940 disiel td

after many months of fearing for the life of the turbo disiel 2.3 (vW/auidi) in my 940 estate i finally have got advice that it is the vaccum pump that is making the rattle in my engine.
this rattle goes away when i pump the break or disconnect the tube to the engine recirculating valve.

i understand there is a spring inside here that can break and cause such a rattle.

any one had this problem , is the solution replacement or repair , , would this cause puffs of black smoke only when i accelerate ( more than before)because the recirculation valve isnt functioning properly?

finally does anyone have or know where i could find a diagram or the vaccum pump system ,

thanks

My vacum pump started making noises at 99,000 miles. The garage took the pump off and ran the engine to check is was the pump before they replaced it. The cost was about £100 about 12 years ago.

No it didn't affect the amount of black smoke on acceleration as far as I can remember.
