V70 2.0 10v Very Low Power @ Low Revs
 
Hi all,

Pleased to back in a Volvo after selling my 240 a few years back.

Fairly recently bought a '98 V70 2.0 10V and it's pretty slow with poor acceleration (don't remember by 2.0 240 being this much of a slug), especially at low revs. Sometimes when pulling away it will crawl along, with my foot on the floor, then pick up as normal when the revs have reached 2000ish.

Car slows a lot on not particularly steep, but steady hills on dual carriageways etc, needing to drop down the gears a lot to keep going. This may be linked.

There is no engine light on. I have cleaned the MAF sensor, but had no change in performance.

Does anybody have any ideas of what to check, or is this normal for one of these?

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

doesn't sound normal, what's the mileage / servicing ?
Might be worth doing a compression test

Thanks for getting back to me.

Mileage is currently at 170,000 with service stamps up to 152k (2017). Previous owner has changed cam belt and serviced it fairly recently. Service light was on on startup (still is) when I bought it, so did an oil,filter and fuel filter change.

On startup the car is fairly smoky with grey smoke coming of the exhaust and a fairly blackened tailpipe end but clears shortly. To my untrained ear the engine sounds like it runs well and starts without hesitation on cold mornings.

I don't have a compression test kit, but will invest in one to check.

"Previous owner has changed cam belt"...

Check that the belt has been fitted correctly, ie timing marks are in line, one or two teeth out can make a difference, plenty of videos / advice on line if you need it

UPDATE: Sure this is now solved. Turned out to be a small hole in thin white vacuum tube that runs from the throttle area to a sensor above the fan. It had rubbed on an edge of the throttle plastic cover.

Car now runs so much smoother.
