Engine System Service Urgent - Red Triangle
 

Hi all,

My 2005 XC90 2.4d has just started to display 'Engine System Service Urgent' as an error message. It then decides to click into 'home safe' mode and the engine will not rev past 2000rpm whilst in drive (will rev as normal in park or n).
Has anyone else come accross this issue / what was the solution / how much did it cost.

Just as the snow has hit...typical.

you will need to get the fault codes read and see what they indicate ... cant really guess on these matters ..

Had this myself last year in the cold weather - codes were something like fuel pressure too high and another too low. Changed the fuel filter (easily do able yourself) and drained out any water in it which made a difference. Also problems if the diesel isn't winter spec and it waxes up on the injectors, causing a juddering flow of fuel which triggers the above codes.

Put some high grade diesel through it (e.g. Shell VPower Diesel) and also some of the Redex cetane booster additive and should clear things out after doing the fuel filter.

Interesting. I had the same problem recently with my XC 90 (2005, 164 hp diesel) - temperature was about -12C, and after about 5 miles the car lost power and the "engine service" light and warning triangle came on, and car wouldn't rev much. Stopped shorlty afterwards, stopped the engine, and re-started it and no problem at all - no warning, no rev limit.

Spoke the the local Volvo dealer who advised a quick interogation of any fault code, and took the car in 45 minutes later. Half hour later, a mechanic spoke to me, and said fault code indicated a fuel starvation problem and they had had two others already that week. He had drained fuel filter which had a little water in it, which must have been frozen.

I was a tad suprised, as the fuel filter had been changed only a couple of months before, but ............ Also, no similar problems in the same, or colder weather last year.

However, since then, no problems at all.

I guess the Volvo is too clever for its own good. A simple car would merely have given a hiccup and then got on with it. The XC90 prima donna's computer had said something is wrong and then virtually shut the engine down. I woudl be suprised if a good quality diesel (Shell) does freeze so easily, so it must have been some ice in the fuel filter.

All that being said, just because my car had this diagnosis in cold weather (-12C or so), doesn't mean that yours has the same problem. Good luck eihter way.

Incidentally, I was on this occasion very impressed with the Volvo dealer - I combined sorting this problem with having a promotional "free winter safety check" (which told me that my washers wer frozen - as if I didn't know) - total bill: zero.

Just having exactly the same problem myself.

I've changed the fuel filter, but can't get rid of the problem.

Thinking must be a fuel pickup filter/faulty pump in the fuel tank.

Investigating in daylight tommorow.

I had a similar problem some months ago, difficulty was that after the engine was stopped it disappeared and took a few days to happen again.
On the last occasion I limped to the Volvo dealership and the were able to see the problem, error message and then diagnose the error.

A software upgrade to the EMC was made and I have not had a repeat of the light or error message showing again, it was a known problem to the dealership.
However I am in France but I would have thought the software is the same?

It took them about ten minuets to load the software and test.

Had the red triangle and warning twice in the 3 months I've owned my '05 D5 163. Once due to a rogue black tuning box and once last week in Austria where the fuelfilter was blocked/had frozen water in, blocking enough fuel to flow on demand. Remove black box/new filter and the car resets itself unlike many (Espace) that needs a £50 reset every time. Once you find the fault, it should reset. Only Volvo or a privateer with the diagnostic and software equipment can tell you the history of the fault from the vehicles memory. It can then be identified, repaired if necessary and avoided (hopefully). Regards, Peter.

Just got the same message on my 12 month old XC90 R design !!!. 2 days ago. Dealer has had one go and could not find a fault. returned the car after allegedly resetting the computers and hey presto ! the dreaded red triangle was back!!
The dealer says a part( cannot wait to find out which) need replacing. Says should be sorted this afternoon.

Got the same message up on my 05 D5 xc90 over the weekend. Operates in "limp home"mode but when ignition turned off and on the message is gone and the car works fine for a while. Going into volvo dealer tomorrow for diagnostic check and will see what happens from there. Surprised a car of this quality does not like cold weather.

If you can get it to Derby, I will read the codes for you.
