time for a rebuild..easily confused bloke!

Hi chaps as title says..cannot put it off any longer..need rebuild kit and float for the much hated solex cisac..I dont hate it (said quietly)...i"m confused about whether its a z1 or z11 carb..I read that there was some confusion about what is actually fitted to the DL ..it"s looking like i will have to get this from Germany or finland and for obvious reasons i would like to get this right first time.,There a few parts on ebay but do not mention fits 240..but fits 360..BTW...the price of the float is quite expensive..any clarity would be appreciated as the closer i look the more blind i become..HJ.

I don't know the answer, but the green book may be helpful in identifying the right one (attached here in 2 parts):

Years ago I had a 240 with the "hated Cisac" and converted it to the earlier Solex (Zenith) CD 175. While I was about it I pulled out all the ignition system with it's impossibly complicated spagheti of coloured tubes and the EGR and Pulse-air, and fitted the simple contact distributor with a Lumenition kit.

Somewhere here I wrote it all up, probably 10 - 15 years ago.

I bit the bullet..after searching and searching and finding only part kits for the z11 carb i read a super thread on turbobricks about a chap with the same carb as me ordering the z11 kit only to find it wasn"t right..so had to order the z1/z2 kit and looks pretty complete for my carb..I managed to find the correct float but not the kit..sooo!..bought the z1 kit..I"ll keep you posted.

Well.. i finally did this job..I was chicken and cat sitting so i had a few days to chin rub and curse!..first job was to replace inlet manifold gasket..not having done any of these tasks before i needed the extra days..On breaking the seal on the old gasket i nearly had kittens when coolant started leaking everywhere.(was not expecting that)..all sorts of things went through my head..what have i broke..etc..apparently coolant runs through the manifold through its own port.Cleaning off the old gasket around these ports proved difficult especially around dipstick end.It was be some kind of cement..and don"t forget like me the central allen bolt that secures the manifold to the engine block underneath..anyhoo!..all back on and no leaks.at this point i did not fancy stripping the carb so i just replaced with old knackered gaskets and the car fired straight up.all was well untill a test drive under load..a lot of missing and hesitation returned with heart pumping.(didn"t want to leave the chickens unattended)..Pulled the solex off and dismantled..looked brand new in side although all screws were pretty loose.(somebodys been in here before methinks)..I took a chance on the z1 carb kit as of the confusion explained in original post..Mine was a z11,Thankfully the top cover gasket and the float ball valve were suitable for the z11,Float was bought seperately from kit..(webcom)..Replaced float set height replaced ball valve top gasket and base gaskets, had to modify gaskets with a craft knife.put it back on car and started as normal..it ran worse and declined to a stall lots of black smoke.Head in hands..Beer time.Next morning removed carb dissasembled removed float and ball valve replaced old float and ball valve reset float height reassembled start car ran sweet.test drive bogged down black smoke returned to base..a lot of head scratching and looking around engine bay i noticed the dizzy was in a squiffy position.corrected and hurrah car runs beautifully no hesitation anymore shaking engine.Just drove fourteen miles home a real joy..I reckon it could still do with a tune up..but i"m not touching anything again!

Hi folks..Bertha in for mot today!...Just wanted to ask a couple of related questions..Cars running great and spark plugs have cleaned off all the soot from daily running.Definitely feels like an invigorated car but not quite right..Now that i have eliminated all the vac leaks in manifold and carb gaskets..Do you think a tune up would be beneficial?..A bit worried it could be running too lean.I heard that the cisac should not be messed with regarding tuning but i remember the ham fisted garage adjusting it to cure an idle issue a while back..Regards.hj.

I looked at my last message like a kid who just saw santa!..Everything was good..I drove to canterbury about 14 miles from me to my girlfriends..put a few pounds of petrol in and left the garage and broke down..would not start..oh my god ! says i..managed to start on choke and limped all the way to girlfriends on choke..hills and everything..poor aul car..That night..i thought about what could be the issue...idles fine..past a certain revs fine though not perfect..had to remove carb again!..clean.. check float height..and replace accelerator pump gasket..even though the original looked great..Back in the room...what a great car..and nice to work on..just to say lots of interchangeable parts of the z1 solex kit for the z11 34..not everything..but enough to get you out of trouble...I dont even know why i posted..its been a hell of a week.hj

Well as usual bertha is unstoppable and gets me where i need to be..However i dont think she is happy..Plenty of power in normal driving and have no doubt will do the job..but i think could do with some tuning as after carb job done by right said fred..(me!)...have to adapt my driving to compensate for new situation...I did not mess with hidden mixture screw..That is just asking for weirdness..but i did adjust to the best of my knowledge the idling mixture screw and has thrown everything out including the choke....Dont get me wrong we"re fine..just different..My question is..how important is the idling side of the carb to the general health and operation of the system..i"ll stop now pub is open!..hj
