Coolant red or blue ?
Which coolant do the XC90's use ? ..... I have red/pink in mine but spoke to a halfords chap and he said it should be blue (silicate) and mentioned the volvo dealer across the road advised a client it should be the blue too. Did the online check and at first came back with the red/pink and now its showing blue ?
If its blue is it worth changing it out ? |
If it helps mine is more green, I bought 4 litres of genuine Volvo concentrate off eBay, you just pour all of them in then top up with water hope it helps.

I bought mine from Volvo and can confirm that it is blue/turquoise colour

Same here in my '09 XC60 D5 ... greenish blue Volvo recommended / approved also know as "Glysantin G64" which is ethylene glycol based containing an inhibitor packages based on salt of organic acids, phosphates and silicate. Free from nitrites, amines and borates with a service life of unto 5 years.

Thanks gents. And pic is much appreciated.
Now in a dilemma if i should get it changed out? |
If it was me I would do as I think red is the incorrect colour? It is simple and quite cheap to do even I did it myself! And I’m no real spanner monkey!
Once it’s done your good for another 5-10 years then |
My 850 was filled with pink/red coolant when I bought it in March, after a lot of research I found Volvo recommend HOAT coolant which meant I had to flush out ll the pink/red. It was flushed 5 times in total, 3 times with Scottish tap water (if Scottish water is good enough to make the best whisky in the world it's good enough to flush my coolant system) then 2 times with de-ionised water

Thats me just bought some new coolant: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202456103425?ul_noapp=true |
For once, Volvo coolant is not expensive and it's concentrate - just need to buy a gallon of distilled water and mix in the quantities suggested for your local climate. As in the picture above, genuine is a blue-green weird color. If not sure what coolant you have, I recommend buying several gallons of distilled water, drain and refill several times. There's always 1l or so that can't be removed from the heater matrix. I'm not comfortable flushing the system with garden hoses, tap water has minerals and may leave limescale deposits, given the high temperatures, which can block or restrict coolant passages
