Does or did your VEA engine use a lot of oil?

I recently started a thread in the Diesel Engines section regarding VEA engines with high oil consumption.

(Volvo VEA engines are 2-litre 4-cyinder petrol and diesel engines manufactured on or after 2014.)

I wanted to know how widespread the issue was and also anything else that I could learn about VEA engines with the problem and VEA engines without the problem.

If you have or have had a VEA-engined Volvo then please can I ask you to join in on the discussion here: -

Many thanks.

What are you defining as "a lot" of oil?

Have you asked Volvo what they regard as an acceptable amount?

Do you know what motor manufacturers in general regard as an acceptable amount?

Have you sought any other insight into the issue of engine oil consumption? I suspect that what you regard as acceptable, and what manufacturers and those who build engines regard as acceptable and not unusual, may be somewhat distanced from one another.

Since my wife's car uses one litre every thousand miles, and since a Volvo dealer suggested that the car needed a new short engine, then Volvo probably deems one litre every thousand miles as unacceptable.

Also, as I've expressed in the original thread under Diesel Engines in which you are also a participant, the real issue is that oil consumption is very low but then rises noticeably at a mileage that varies from car to car. The change itself suggests that there is an engine issue. If the engines had high oil consumption from new then it would be an entirely different situation, and I might be driving a different brand and not having to explain myself yet again.

The fact that Volvo redesigned the oil control rings in 2016 suggests that they knew that there was a problem that needed to be addressed. They wouldn't do this for no reason.

Having said all of the above, and as described by me in another thread on the Volvo forum, some VEA engines show degraded oil seals, which might cause the vicious circle of increased oil consumption and consequent carbon build-up on the pistons and rings.

Chicken or egg? Is it small holes or carbon build-up or a bit of both? I don't know, but the new oil control rings seem to be Volvo's fix.
