S40 2.0D Throttle Body Cleaning Guide
Morning All!
Right well after reading many posts on here and struggling to find a picture guide I thought I would lend a hand to anyone else who may want to DIY clean the throttle body rather than pay Volvo £50ish to clean it for you. Disclaimer: This is a guide of how I did the throttle body clean and therefore take no responsibility if you undertake this work yourself. Right so here is the engine with throttle body attached. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_001.JPG Here is the throttle body with everything still attached. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_002.JPG Remove the white data lead/cable on the left. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_003.JPG Then remove the Green data lead/cable on right. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_004.JPG Remove the black tube connected to the side of the plastic throttle body. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_005.JPG Here you can see two of the torx bolt holes. (I have removed the bolts so you can see better) There is an additional bolt underneath the throttle body. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_006.JPG Success! Throttle body removed. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_007.JPG The state of inside my throttle body when removed. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_008.JPG The other side. Yuck! http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_009.JPG http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_010.JPG Right out came the carb cleaner and an old toothbrush. :-) Oh and an old rag/cloth. Then hey presto, all nice and clean again. http://www.monkeycustard.co.uk/volvo...rottle_011.JPG Hope this helps some people. Good Luck! :-) |
Nice guide, was gonna do one a while ago but haven't got the correct size torx bit (can u tell me size please)? do you need to renew gasket/seal and has it made much of a difference in the cars running?

you forgot to tell us about chamfering the edges of the disc flap both sides top and bottom, this an actuall technical repair from volvo uk..
other than that good pics |
Managed to do mine this afternoon after finding the correct torx bit in my toolbox. Was in the same state as yours craigblues but managed to get it as clean, didn't file the flap either as copperknob advises as it seemed ok and moved freely. I also scrapped out the crud from the manifold as that was quite bad too. while i was at it, i fitted a blanking plate to the egr valve as that arrived yesterday via fleabay! Haven't taken it for a spin yet but it definitely idled better and smoother then before as it was a bit lumpy when cold.

Question - what advantages are there to this procedure.
Better acceleration ? Improved MPG?Preventing a known issue? Tempted to give it a go but need to understand what the advantages are before committing p.s......excellent guide. |
advantages of cleaning if you dont can give you bad or non starting as previously advised you must chamfer edges to prevent it happing again i cant recall the technical journal number but volvo uk recomend this repair as per tie
|
Also, have you seen the ****e on the mass flow sensor? The gunk insulates it slightly causing incorrect readings.

Cracking guide mate, We need more of these on here I think.

Good guide. Whilst mine was off, I checked inside the manifold that the throttle flap attches to; and sprayed lots and lots of carb cleaner into that as well. Gave it a good clean with a rag, put it back together and good job done me thinks.
Well done for the guide. |
