Help! Wont start, No ground to pump relay

I can't seem to figure out why my 88 240 won't start. The pumps will not run and the fuel injectors also are not functioning. I have traced the problem to the fuel relay... no ground on bl/gn wire going into the relay, coming from pin 17 on the ECU. if I take the cover off of the relay and manually make contact with the relay, push it together.. no joy, it still will not start. It does have spark, it will start with a squirt of starter fluid any help would be great thanks.

HI
the ecu uses the ground to fire the injectors so it might be a ecu problem or the ecu not getting a signal form something else
sorry I cant help more

had similar thing, I also opened fpr and wedged the relay so I could hear the fp prime.

My reason for no spark turned out to be cps.

Thanks guys for the responses mines and 88 so it has a Hall effect sensor instead of a CPS. I ordered an ECU off feebay 😂. I cleaned my grounds as well…I think it could be my ECU . I’ll update once I get it and try. Thanks

I'm told that you can bypass the relay thus:-

Am I reading this correctly - manually closing the relay contacts has no result, but joining the contacts for fuses 4 and 6 lets the engine start?

That surely suggests that the fault lies in the relay itself - have you tried simply replacing it?

I think that's what the jumper means. I haven't tried it.

Clifford Pope Nov 8th, 2021 08:29

I know that's what the jumper does - I've done that in the past. It simply by-passes the relay and lets the fuel pumps run continuously. I meant if the OP has done that and it works, but manually holding the relay closed doesn't, then that must pinpoint the fault as something in the relay itself. The usual relay fault is corrosion at the soldered terminals. With care the joints can be re-soldered.

I have the same problem.

The cps cured the lack of spark and got it running with the relay opened up and wedged so the FP runs.

A new FPR has not cured it.

the 50a relay under driver steering wheel, part no. 3523804 is noisy, I'm not sure what this does, I'm guessing its the main relay? or is it the 4th gear lock (auto) relay? - maybe not related, not convinced at this stage it is. - EDIT, it is the overdrive relay

On any other car I'd fuel pump inertia switch has triggered, does the 240 even have the inertia cuto out switch/sensor? - if so, where is it? :)

I'm hearing the fpr is only active when the engine cranks, in which case I'm looking at it powering on ignition for a second like most other cars, so I'm looking at it wrong.

Are there 2 fuel pumps or just one? - I'm guessing 2 based on a google search, my in tank pump I can hear, if there's one under by the Fuel Filter then maybe this is shot - the car was sold to me as needing a fuel pump, so maybe this one.
In which case the car can run off just the in tank pump when relay bodged.
I'll get underneath it tomorrow

I am partly confuddled, not sure of some terms &c used in posts in this thread so far.

But here's a link to an old thread that might help.

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...lay+blade+fuse

The information in that thread needs to be made in to an HowTo for the forum. The information would be useful in the Articles area of the 240 section of the forum. Before people remembering that thread are not often here to remember.

Stephen
