850R Engine oils ?

My 855r is due for its first service under my ownership and I was just wondering what is the best engine oil to use for this car?

It has had castrol SLX (now castrol edge) in the past.

Any tips on a great oil out there most welcome.

the flush is 5w/50 too and i recon about five or so flushes is its lifespan....note if you are going to flush change the oil filter before you do...

i use clean 5w/40 after i have drained the oil and changed the filter just to get the last of the crap and metal fragments out.....i anticipate getting about 5 flushes out of that oil....i fit a new filter before the flush cos othewise the crap oil in the filter contaminates my flush oil.....
cheers mate

Hi Guys,

Well oil and tyres are my specialist subject as they say on a certain TV programme.

Using the new castrol edge is still a semi-syn oil which is tine but I would recommend a full syn like the halfords 5/40 which I use or shell helix of the same weighting. I used to use Mobil 0/40 but due to cost and my noisy tappets I used these instead now.

As for flushes I used Wynn’s oil flush every change to clean out the sump, I don’t suffer the varnish problem to due regular oil changes which can be every 3k, depending on driving conditions.

As for syn or semi, well I you change over to full syn the rubber seals may well leak due to ageing which is less of a problem when using full syn oil products.

Lastly another trick is to pour in a litre of gearbox oil as a thinner and a wee drive around and then flush gives good results but never tried it myself as yet.

If you cant change the oil often at least change the filter which I have done in the past and topped up when I don’t have the time or weather conditions don’t allow me to do it having no garage :-(

Just my two pennies

Mark

Castrol oils

Hi guys,
Just to add some extra info, all the castrol edge oils are fully synthetic not semi. They use to be called longtec and long life two but recently castrol changed all the packaging to gold and they are now called edge, edge diesel and edge sport.
It starts at £16 a litre retail and is mainly used on the newer vauxhalls, bmws and seats which have longer service intervals. When my customers come in to buy it they are amazed at how much oil they use.The reason is the oil actually burns taking out the crud with it, which is why you need to top it up so often.
In my t5r i use 5w30 fully synthetic oil, but not castrol and change it twice a year.

Mike
