Steering pieces not fitting together right

I have a 1969 142 that i'm trying to get working and i have a problem with the spacing of the steering components. In this picture you can see that the pieces do not fit together all the way.

The other end is as far towards the steering box as I can get it as you can see in this pic.

I noticed that there is a spring showing in the first pic through a gap about the same size as i need to close, is there something in the steering column that i need to adjust?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

If I have time tomorrow I will post a photo of how it should be. Have a hospital appointment, depends on how long they keep me waiting.

This looks similar to the late type Amazon column and I can remember and have found the thread of someone having a similar problem:

Looks like you have to give the old sleeves a blimin' good whack to get them out before offering up the new bushes

Managed to shoot a few quick shots.Hope it helps It might be different to yours as I have electric PAS.
BTW, where did you get the new bushes?

Interesting that the design of yours is so different, and it seems to accommodate for adjustment in the direction I am having problems with. This car definitely has some strange things about it so at this point I'm wondering if it simply has the wrong parts scavenged from other cars.

I got the bushings from here http://www.ipdusa.com/products/4742/...nkage-bushings

I've just been and taken a look at mine. It's RHD but should be similar. Looks like maybe the coupling on the steering box has slid further down towards the box than it should be? There's definitely more of the splined shaft on my steering box showing below the coupling than in your pics.

*EDIT* having looked back at your pics, it looks like the coupling maybe needs to move further onto the steering box, as you said. Strange...

Pics of mine attached...

I notice you said that you were trying to get this car 'working'. Was the steering column fully functional before you started to replace the bushes?
