What exhaust to buy?
1992 240SE B200F
The "middle box has a small blow, the box behind the cat. It's really time to replace the exhaust from behind the cat backwards. SUggestions / recommendations please. I am open to stainless or non-stainless. I do basically want a good decent OK exhaust. I'll get a garage to fit it. For me, wrestling with exhausts is a thing from a different country where they do things differently. Bruises, grazes, horrid cold times under the car....and that's the good aspects. . |
Are you wanting one that will last for life or just a few years?
Going to keep the cat or bin it? |
I want a sensible lasting. I won't benefit from a last for ever exhaust. But then again I'd like to sell or leave behind a car in good order. Oh. And do stainless exhausts fail "mechanically"? I don't know. A respected by my family garage said that to me years ago.
So a lot will depend on .... price. I'm not thinking of binning the cat. Who knows what future legislation will say about cars that were originally fitted with a cat. &c. &c. The Supreme Court might make a ruling .... . |
A cheap stainless exhaust will crack and even rot through. They tend to sound tinny.
A good stainless system will be thicker gauge, not sound tinny but it is still possible for the to crack if not supported correctly. Should they crack welding them up will resolve the failure. |
Volvo do a cat back kit that is only mild steel, but did last for a good 10 yrs on my 93 240 that my dad still has, we have just bought another one about 6 months ago to replace it. It’s actually cheep too, about £180 for everything cat back, including rubbers and clamps.

Thank you. FRF Volvo dealers Swansea have quoted me £144 including VAT. Delivery cost will depend on the size of the box. . |

Sounds right, my £180 was an approximate guess. I had £150 in mind actually but didn’t want to give faulse hope. Mine came from local dealer with VOC discount.
Hopefully pic attached if it worked! |

volvo 240 exhaust
Hello Stephen
ive had a euroflow exhaust on my 89 estate 240 for almost 2yrs no problems cost me £130 full exhaust including all fixings its holding up ok.......louise |
I had to replace my 3 year old Volvo FRF exhaust as the back box and over axle pipe rotted away. Went over a speed bump and the tailpipe dropped off and on looking welds very rusty and over axle pipe holed!
The rear hanger rubber split within days and ended up fitting one for a ford. It seemed at the time the Volvo exhaust kit wasn't available so bought a euroflow make which worked fine but needed a few tweaks to fit to replace the Volvo kit. James. |
