2014 XC60 D5 - engine bay noise - diagnosis help please!!

Hi all,

The ol' XC60 is creeping up to 100k miles , recently had all 4 shocks and springs changed after a front and rear snapped and theres also a new noise from the engine.

I've hosted a video here for reference >>> https://youtube.com/shorts/IM8dIr_zVf8?feature=share

- Sounds like it's coming from where I believe the fuel pump is
- doesnt happen immediately upon start up, but after a few seconds it kicks in
- high pitched, clicky/ticky sort of sound
- new noise...! Hasn't been there long
- regular service is up-to-date, all by Volvo dealer (but annual service due in a few months)

Any pointers appreciated!!

If you are talking about that popping noise...Most common problem is the vacuum pump...Or more exactly the valve mounted on it..try search on internet the code 31430964 ... thats probably what you need to replace...But youd better go to a shop/service/dealer and check if the part number fits your VIN...If I recall corectly, there are 2 different part numbers, depeding on your vacuum pump...

Thank you!

Found this thread and their video seems to show the same noise / issue as mine

https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...-2012-a-92028/

For future reference and for anyone else who may have this, I've attached some images.

Will replace this and report back to confirm.

Thanks again! Knew I could count on you lot

I had a very similar problem three years ago & the mechanic diagnosed it as a faulty vacuum check valve that had subsequently damaged the EGR valve.... both were replaced @ £600 + & the noise disappeared. If I can find the video I took at the time, I'll upload it.

What he said

+1 for the vacuum check valve on the vacuum pump.

If you pump the brake pedal a few times you'll likely find that the metallic tapping goes away for a few seconds but will return.

I've just changed the valve on my 2012 V60 D5, it's not a particularly difficult job to do. The most painful part is the cost of the new valve - make sure you're sitting down when they tell you the price :)

Cheers
Robin

Thanks all, small plastic valve... £100 plus fitting which seems fairly straightforward (for someone who knows what they're doing)
Got a friend with a garage so he's ordered the part and changing it Wednesday, hopefully it hasn't caused damage to any other parts....

Will reply with update to help others out.

Ok, the tiiiiiiny expensive part has been replaced...

The cap holding the red rubber diaphragm part had all come off completely (see images) and we had to fish out the parts from the connecting hose.

Certainly done the job though 😊

Hi. Have you a part number of the whole part in the photo, where from and an actual price? Regards
