Cylinder Head Failure
 

well, not a good week with the XC90 . After driving 10 meters down the road the car has decided to give up on me. It has gone into the locally indie who has identified that the engine has no compression and suspects that something has failed within the engine. He is working on a bill to replace the engine / head and has advised that its going to cost £500 to remove the head.

I have got all the tools at home to be able to remove the head but could do with a pdf on how to remove the cylinder head / engine on this model, if anyone can help.

The engine is a 2006 D5 185 bhp variant

Would it not be easier / cheaper to buy a complete engine from a breakers and replace in one go?

maybe , although I cant find an engine for under £1700, I was hooping that the damage to the engine was only to the head and I could replace for half the cost

This printout is for a 2005 D5 AWD auto model. My copy of VIDA only covers 2003 - 05. Hope it helps.

thanks Mike, I really appreciate it. If anyone does have a copy for the 2006 model please let me know although I doubt that there will be much difference.

I'd be very interested to know what caused this - I've certainly not heard many instances of this sort of failure on here for these engines - have you got any idea ?
What sort of mileage/service record has the vehicle got - it's not cambelt related is it ?

It has full service history and is just touching 180,000. the dealer suspects that the one of the swirl pot flaps has worked loose and landed on top of the piston, until the head is removed I wont know for sure.

The cambelt hasn't snapped and I was thinking of replacing it soon, kind of glad I haven't paid for it to be done if this was going to happen. I've read a few threads about head/engine damage but certainly not as many as a Vauxhall, guess that's why replacement engines/ heads are expensive and difficult to find.

Is anyone aware whether the head can be skimmed?

Was compression low on all cylinders?
Doubt a head skim will help if it's the kind of piston and valve damage that a swirl flap would do. I once had a pinto engine break its camshaft in two places without snapping the belt. I think it dropped a valve as the first failure. Hole in piston and snapped camshaft followed.

It has zero compression on 3 cylinders and the other two are about 350 psi. looking to get the car back next week and strip it before the end of the month (weather dependant) . I'm getting the feeling that this could be a write off.
