2007 S80 front sub frame same as Mondeo ?
 

Hi all, The front sub frame on my S80 is badly rusted and may need replacing. Does anyone know if its the same as a Mondeo MK4 (?). It looks very similar .

Reason i ask is you can get a brand new Mondeo sub frame for reasonable money where as a Volvo sub frame only seems to be a used on ebay at similar money ?

Is this a one off issue, not seen it mentioned before, am picking my new 2006 S80 up next week!

There is a theme developing in my car world of cars getting to 16 plus years and sub frames that have a hard life. My BMW 3 series rear SF was suspect at last MOT. My S80 is suspect with front subframe at MOT. My mate have just had one fitted to a AUDI A7..£2k at a garage. SOOOO the bodies are galvanised painted under sealed and last for ever. The subframes are mild steel (on the S80) with a bit of chassis black ! I'm not sure the plastic under pan helps on the Volvo as its screwed close to sub frame trapping moisture. My S80 has done 268k so its probably seen a lot of moisture. I'm nt sure its a thing on Volvos but it is a thing on old cars. Might be worth a look at it but you need the wheel off and or the plastic under engine cover. If its not been mentioned at MOT it may not be an issue. I sort of believe in supply & demand on ebay. They wouldnt be on ebay is no one ever bought them.. There are a few for S80s and a lot for 3 series....but there will be a lot more 3 series in the world than s80s ??? good luck. I still thinks its the same as a Mondeo !!!

On the basis of your post plus another thread on PH, I have just now trawled through 70 odd Gumtree ads for S80s aged 2006- 2009 under £3k and found 4 mentions of subframe corrosion in roughly 35 cars MOT histories, so not endemic but worth bearing in mind, only one mention the front subframe.

Also saw this phrase, ....

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

Vehicle has reached an age where all components are corroded **
Not exactly sure what it truly means!

Have you actually had an advisory on your MOT for the rusty sub frame on the S80?

No, I'm in N Ireland, the MOT here is either a pass or fail, no list of advisories, but only items the car has failed on.

I'm picking car up on Tuesday, will venture a quick look! It's only got 110k miles, decent history, fingers crossed.
