2009 V70 2.4D SE - Views from the Forum

Hi All

Thanks for running such a great forum.. I have found many useful tips on here

I just wanted to ask for any general views. I am just about to buy a 2009 V70 2.4d SE. I had a 2004 S60 D5 which has been great but is now end of life!

The V70 has 122k Miles on it, it has a full Volvo service history, 12 months MOT and new timing belt, tensioner and water pump. I am slightly concerned that the mileage is quite high for the age, but I know Volvos can do huge miles if looked after….Should I be worried?

Secondly the MOT advised slight play in both rack ends.. I understand you can buy the rackends separately and replace them fairly easily?… is that right?

I would be grateful for any views from the guys and girls on here who are more knowledgeable than me

Thanks in advance

Mark

That’s not high mileage. The car is 12 years old, so it equates to just over 10,000 miles per year. 122k on one of these is nothing, barely run in!

The 2.4D is still a D5 engine, but its the detuned version with less power. The ones with more power have a “D5” badge on the boot, yours likely has a “2.4D badge”. Don’t worry though, the power is perfectly adequate.

Cam belt has been done, that’s good. What about the auxiliary belt, auxiliary belt tensioner & air con belt? These should be replaced, as if they fail/break, the belts can get tangled in the timing area & de-rail the cam belt. That can destroy the engine, so it’s important that these belts/tensioner are replaced if they haven’t been, or at least have proof for your own peace of mind that they have been replaced.

As for the steering rack, I don’t think the ends are replaceable. I may be wrong, but you’ll either need a new rack or send it away for refurbishment as far as I know.

yes steering rack ends are replacable fairly easy job for a decent home mechanic there is a tool available to make the job easyer but it can be done without it or take it to your local trusted garage

I would be worried about the water pump , they got rid of a perfectly good volvo water pump and put a cheap non volvo one on I would guess . It will fail prematurely ... Check it out ...
