Driver door locks itself immediately
 

Hi all,

Starting to get used to my new 240 and have managed to unseize both driver and passenger door locks with a few days of wd40 and gentle persuasion.

I have however discovered a strange issue where the driver door locks itself immediately once unlocked and the key must be held in the open position while pulling the handle to gain entry. The same goes for exit as the button must be held up before being able to pull the lever to exit.

Nothing in the mechanism appear to be seized but there does appear to be a spring missing (part 1304820) when compared to the passenger side which doesn't have the same issue.

I have ordered the spring from skandix but I am wondering if anyone else has come across this issue and is replacing the spring all that is needed?

Does yours have central locking? The inset square top right in your diagram shows the rod from the push button with a thing like a black cotton real near the bottom with wires coming out.

There's a switch sealed inside with a spring that has to be overcome to activate all the door locks as you push the button. The spring on mine had weakened with age so that the weight of the button plus switch alone was sufficient to engage all the locks. A quick fix was to wind a bit of matching sticky tape round the button so that the friction supported it in the hole in the door capping.

Looks like that is part 3540136 which has since been replaced by 1347548 (see https://handlerparts.com/en/Product/Volvo/1347548)

This may help for the central locking as previously mentioned by C.P. :~ also includes the door lock switch loom ie the area where the cables tend to fray causing shorts/battery drain (worth checking) all repairable.

2 springs are missing. The big one you have already mentioned which returns the key back to the 'neutral' position as it were which won't help.

The one causing you to have to hold the key over to get in, and the button up to get out, is a tiny little bugger which goes between the plates, also available from Skandix, or as I did, made one from a safety pin coil

@CosmicBike thanks. I had actually ordered that one too just in case :)

I put the door card back on today as the kids were a little too interested in playing with the door.

In doing so I re-routed one of the cables to the central locking switch mechanism a little and refitted the plastic shield. Hey Presto - all working as expected - even with both springs still missing.

Strange and does point to issues in the switch like Bob said. I'll add the springs when they arrive and possibly look at replacing/repairing the switch if it happens again.
