Winter tyres
 

I usually fit full winter tyres at this time of year on a dedicated second set of wheels, but this year I'm thinking of just going for a set of all seasons on my normal wheels. I can't be bothered with the initial expense and the hassle of getting them changed over twice a year. I live in the extreme north of Scotland at sea level and although they're very cold, like everywhere else in the UK, the winters here are wet rather than overly snowy.

I'm not about to get into a debate on the relative merits of all seasons v. full winters - I know they are compromised in comparison to winters and summers.

Can anyone recommend good all season tyres from personal experience? I've heard very good things about Pirelli Scorpion Verde all seasons, apparently they're OE on Range Rovers etc and have great snow capabilities but I've not heard much about their summer performance.

The new Michelin CrossClimate sounds perfect but it's not available in SUV sizes yet.

Many folk find General Grabber tyres to fit the bill.

The Pirelli all seasons are on (275/45 20) and initial impressions are that the ride is improved over the ContiSportContact5 summers but tyre noise levels don't seem to have changed.

Got them fitted on my 3.2 petrol xc90 just because they were new on wheels i bought for car. Good for first 2000 miles, then eco-rubber gets hard and they very bad in cold/wet. Last winter in Germany was about 1-2 degrees with tiny ice on the road. Was fortunate enough to hit curb instead of city bus...
Wouldn't suggest to get too brave with set of those on snowy road.
After 2 years and less than 15k on i have crack in one already. Just waiting to use them to legal limit next spring and put new tyres on. Got set of 18" for winter and 20" for summer. Swap takes less than an hour. I think it's worth doing it.
Done it on previous xc90. Had pirelli scorpion ice and snow(great tyres but bit noisy) and Bridgestone Dueler HP( good grip fairly quiet but getting worn rapidly).
