Fuel and Temp gauge problems

2 Attachment(s)
I removed the speedo from my 71' 164 last week to have a look but as you can probably see from the pictures attached, someone has been there before. Now I need to know, are the red, black and blue wires that go to the voltage stabilizer in correct places? I have left it as i found them for the time being but I need them fixed. I think its the voltage stabilizer that's at fault, anyone help me with this?

There is no voltage stabiliser there, looks like it has been removed completely

Its hanging on the end of the blue wire

It shouldn't be, they're normally plugged into the back of the speedo, not dangling from a bit of wire. It's a little coffin shaped metal box. Having said that, Maplins etc do small solid state voltage regulator kits using a zener diode. That will work like a charm.

I bought another speedo from a VOC member which is brand new and has the same VDO stabilizer hanging from 3 wires. However, the wires are different coloured and the circuit on the back of the speedo is competely different. Therefore, no use to me, so still on the hunt for another. Although the stabiliser is new I cannot guarantee it works, I checked the resistance and it showed very little if any.

If anyone can help with another stabilizer or at least tell me how it should be attached or the colour of the wires would be much appreciated.

I'll take a photo tomorrow, it's a bimetallic strip stabiliser, it won't kill the instruments if it doesn't work, the fuel and temp gauge just over read.
