Transfer gearbox oil renew.
 

Beginning to get a transmission whine. So decided to drain, inspect for bits and renew the oil in the transfer box.
Then found it does not have a drain plug.:thumbs_down:

Don't really want to do this .

I now find that the recommendation is renew the oil every 60K, little late for me !

Has anybody tried siphoning the oil out ?

Not hard to remove the angle gear oil by sucking out with a hand pump as you purchased. Clean the plug area with a small wire brush and brake cleaner before the plug is removed. Gently snake the tubing into the angle gear housing as you don't want to get the tubing stuck inside. Use the correct Volvo oil for replacement. A litre (quart) is all required. Use a new crush washer on the fill plug.

Changed both the Bevel gear box and Differential drive oil. Removed using the vac hand pump and filled using a 100ml syringe, no major issues. 650ml out and in for both, using the fill to plug level then removing 160ml and 100ml respectively for Bevel and Differential. Like you say you have to play with the pipe to get it in and out. Mobile 1 SHC 75W90 High Performance Synthetic oil Gear in the Bevel and Volvo 80w90 Rear axle gear oil in the Differential.
No play in any of the Bevel gearbox output bearings.

Both oils were very dark and thick like thin Bovril, good news is no silvery bits. The last bit of Differential oil to come out was like light coffee, I suspect this was a surface layer of emulsified oil.
Fingers crossed the transmission wine is reduced.

I've changed all 4 of my gearbox oil on the p2r, it's well worth doing.

why did you remove oil at the end ? fill to level is usually correct.

Did you change the haldex oil as well. Also there is a filter in there that should be changed.

The Haldex oil was done by my independent Volvo garage when I had DEM problems at 130,000mls. I asked them to also renew the Haldex filter, but to get the filter out they advised that the exhaust would have to come down and as it was original exhaust they were reluctant to disturb it. But I do believe it is possible to remove the filter if you make a bispoke angled driver.
