Roof rack restoration

I was given an estate roof rack frame for free, the galvanised steel was fine but slats were long rotted and the mounts weren't galvanised, with expected crumbly results.

Filled the rivet holes, primed and enamelled, and made some new pine slats, suitably dyed to contrast. Slats attached by pipe clamps on the underside so no screw or rivets in top surface.

A couple of period-correct thule roofbars give a solid mounting on a saloon. No problems with bonnet or boot or driver's visibility.

Expedition time!

A lot of work but clearly worth it. Useful piece of kit!👍

I am impressed sir, Well done. And I am curious about the roof bars. Were they difficult to find? Or expensive? Postage or other delivery? Did you obtain the rubbers to fit between the roof bars and the car's gutters?

I have two Thule bars and two Volvo bars obviously (says me) made by Thule. The car will have to go, but not quite yet. I am cogitating many things .... at the moment it is nearly time to start marinading the lamb shanks in balsamic vinegar etc .... a deeply wonderful balsamic vinegar from a knowledgeable enthusiast run deli .... deep joy.

Regards

.

Early Thule, Volvo did a volvo branded one as an accessory. Later black ones work too. They come in two heights, shorter is plenty tall enough. Missing rubber can be fabricated from a 150x150x1.5mm EDPM sheet because replacements are NLA.
Lots of sandpaper, wire wool and autosol to get this shiny, plenty far to go before it's mirror polished.

Use 126cm bars for a 240. They pop up on fleabay from time to time at varying prices, from £20-100, from what I've seen.

Enjoy lunch.

I have both a pair of Thule and Volvo ones , similar but not the same. Fortunately they are the same height, so a flat bed when all on the 245 .😀👍

If you had a number of different heights you could have made it like the ski-jump ramp on a through-deck cruiser and taken off in your Harrier jump-jet from it Andrew :-).
