OEM coolant heater retrofit
 

Good evening, gentlemen.
As the winter has finally arrived, I had an idea to retrofit my 2002 S40 1.9d with a coolant heater.
I did some research and discovered that there where coolant heaters installed on S/V40s with chassis numbers bellow 839034 (item 36) and the used spares with those seem to come from year 2000 and 2001 cars.

It would be fitted on the left side by the steering rack. The two hoses seem to fit where one of my heater core hoses would fit. The wires seem to be integrated in one of the harnesses.
It would not be an issue for me to jerry rig a power supply since it would not fit into my harness and (not to flex) in an engineer by trait. But I have no information on how they are fed - none of the wiring diagrams seem to have anything on them, no instructions on replacement or use or anything out there.

Anyone has this in their car? Is there an auxiliary connector or is it powered by 12V?

The ones I have seen (used by VOLVO and others) is a sort of small kettle element that "screwed/pushed" into a core plug space in the block. Usually for connection to a 240v supply from a post outside of work or home.
In your scenario it's a 12v supply that would be quite a current draw. Also there has to be a water pump somewhere for circulation because where it is won't heat up much of the coolant system just by convection.

From the dates you quote on the parts these would come from the D4192T2 engine? The one with the Bosch rotary pump is what I'm meaning if the code is wrong. These are very thin on the ground now as they were only sold for about 18 months if memory serves. My S70 TDI uses the 5cyl version of the same injection pump and it has a 3 plug version of the same mounted to the passenger side of the engine. I'm not sure if they switch on with the engine glow plugs or are controlled separately, but so far as I can tell there is no way to control them manually to warm the engine before starting (if that's your intention) I think they are to get the engine warmed up faster after it has started. You might get a better answer on how they work if you ask on a Skoda or VW forum as cars with the VP37 pump are still quite numerous especially Skoda Octavia.

I once went down a rabbit hole looking into these plugs myself on my car as it was taking forever to heat up. New engine thermostat sorted that after much wasted time and effort, if that happens to be the issue that has started you thinking.
