Head skim and new gasket - delighted but confused?

Hi Everybody.

Happy New Year!

Well, the 940 is running like a dream since the head skim and new head gasket but I am confused about something? Oil and water never mixed, the leak was from the coolant to the outside, the least bad way for the hg to fail. What I am confused about is that she has always used a lot of oil yet since picking her up from the garage on 25 November 2021 I haven't had to top up the oil once? I normally top up the oil weekly or fortnightly and my oil bill used to be high. The garage can think of no reason why my oil usage has dropped. Even allowing for the fact we went on holiday in my partner's car it is still a long time/lot of miles without using any oil?

Perhaps there was also a hidden oil leak that you couldn't see Ellie and that has now been sorted.

If it's doing what it should, not leaking and not making any untoward noises, i would just enjoy a (much) cheaper oil bill and keep your eye on it until you're happy that everything has settled and it's not using oil.

Happy New Year to you too!

Hi Dave. I spoke to the garage and they were confident that nothing they did or replaced would account for the stoppage of high oil usage. Odd! They used the same viscosity oil they and I always use, nothing to do with that either. Its very nice lifting the bonnet every Sunday now and not having to top anything up! :-)

You may have been losing oil out of the turbo return seal that goes in the side of the block at the bottom, as that should have been renewed it might have been the source if your oil leak.

It might have also been leaking from the rocker cover at the back of the head and leaking down the back of the engine so you didn't see it, might have even been leaking at the front and going behind the cam covers so you didn't see it.

However if you were needing to top it up weekly I would have thought it would have been an obvious leak if it was high up so I'd say it is more likely to be the return seal.

Do you mean near the bottom of the redblock or somewhere else??

If there was a head gasket leak, is it possible that there was more crankcase pressure than usual - this would make the engine breathe slightly harder and use a touch more oil...

It is an odd one, maybe garage missed something, maybe they changed a leaky seal either way mighty Odin has smiled down upon you don't question anything just be happy its behaving, don't worry it will soon throw something else up:tounge_smile:

Its possible when the head was skimmed the valves were removed and new valve steam oil seals were fitted.
