2015 XC60 serpentine snapped - battery charging warning
Hello all.
I'm sure this question has been asked before but could not see the threads. My 2015 XC60 D5 Auto snapped the serpentine belt and in the process it triggered the Battery charge fault stop safely warning. I stopped immediately to investigate but then decided to drive home about 1 mile. The car died completely with no power at all on the dashboard. I called RAC and the mechanic confirmed that the serpentine belt had snapped. I am hoping to get both belts done as the car has just done 100K 1. The belt had an almost clean snap and I don't think there is any debris that may have interfered with other components. I can't help but fear that there may be a ripple effect to other things caused by this belt. What else is likely to go wrong after such a belt snaps? 2. Is this problem worth me taking the car to the main dealer or any good independent Volvo specialist garage can do the job? My initial thoughts are taking to an independent garage will be kind to my pocket but I wouldn't want to commit to something that will then cost me more in the long run. 3. Can someone please recommend a good Volvo independent garage around Dudley, West Midlands area? Many thanks for your assistance. |
Belts do not snap on their own without some other underlying issue so take it to someone who knows Volvos.

The serpentine belt on my Freelander 2 - with the 3.2 Si6 Volvo engine - also snapped. No power steering, alternator, A/C as well as the waterpump, on that engine.
The cause was the tensioner pulley bearing seizing, locking the plastic idler. It was just a matter of (very short) time before the idler melted and the belt chafed through. |
When you say serpentine is this what we all refer to as the Aux belt in Volvo talk? If so your extremely lucky it didn't entangle itself with the cambelt. Make sure you change all the tensioners along with all the necessary belts. It goes without saying, but use Volvo parts for peace of mind.

I thought Volvo had modified the D5 on later models to prevent the aux belt interfering with the cambelt if it snapped? |
