D5 163 timing belt

Has anyone any recent price for genuine timing belt and water pump fitted?

I fancy doing it myself but don’t have the time at present.

Normally, the water pump isn’t replaced... Volvo dealerships don’t touch the pump in a cam belt service, nor does an independent Volvo Specialist. If your car has a genuine pump on it, they rarely fail. That’s why they don’t bother changing them or telling people to. However, you may still want to have it changed and you can tell the garage to do it if you want, that’s up to you. If the car has really high mileage, then maybe its worth considering.

I imagine you’d be looking around £400-£450, approximate figures.

If you want genuine parts it's about £400 just for bits. Only about 4 hours labour in top.

If you know the water pump is the original Volvo one then you are wasting your money changing it as they last forever. If the cambelt has been changed before and an aftermarket pump has been fitted then I'd replace it for a genuine one.

I'm pretty certain that Volvo themselves only quote about an hour to do the job and in all fairness that would be accurate.

Very simple job and I totally agree with your other comments re water pump.

Thanks for the responses. Genuine belt kit and water pump is a little over £200 on eBay. I don’t know about the water pump but if it’s original (2005) I would rather be safe than sorry as it’s about 70 for the pump.

I would hope all in for 300 - 350 if it’s a hour job but probably being optimistic.

Infact I have the receipt from previous owner when Volvo changed the belt in 2015 so I’ll check see if the water pump was changed.

Belt was changed in November 2015 just the belt kit with no water pump. Was on 54k now on 114k.

Am I jumping the gun to much?

Its a xc90 fyi.

Was that a genuine belt from a dealership or Volvo Specialist?

The recommended interval on these engines for cam belts is 10 years or 108k (whichever comes first). Your car hasn't done 108k since the belt was replaced, but its nearly 10 years old since the last belt. By right, it should be changed next year.

If the water pump is genuine, I'd leave it alone and just replace the belt, idler pulley, auxiliary belt and auxiliary belt tensioner. You could, if you wanted, leave that until next year.

It depends if you just want to get it out of the way early or not.

Genuine belt kit fitted by dealership. So it should still have original water pump.

I’m 18 months ish early and now I’m saying that outloud it seems daft to change it. Doesn’t it?

You have proof it was done and a dealership did the work, so they won't have put some cheap junk on it.

Don't bother with the water pump, they're bulletproof. I'd get the cam belt replaced nearer the time. No urgency now.
