Idle Air Control Valve Wanted

Hi guys! new to this so might be doing it wrong.

I'm looking for an idle air control valve for my 1996 volvo 850 t5 estate.

Ive had a nightmare with the volvo garage in edinburgh, they failed to do a diagnostic check and ordered a crankshaft sensor from eurocar parts, the rough idle and stalling was not fixed. They have now informed me it is definitely the idle air control valve but i need to source the part myself!

So i am looking to my fellow volvo owners for some help. Could anyone point me in the right direction to get one? Or if any of you have one i could buy off you?

Any help would be appreciated!

cheers
Drew

Hi Drew,

You can get a used one on eBay for around £25 to £30. Make sure you get one for the 850 - the C/V/S 70 ones have differently angled pipe connections.

New ones are hard to find and are around the £200 mark. Fitting it by the way is a 5 min DIY job.

Regards
John

Hi John,

Cheers for getting back to me. I’ll go down the eBay route, is it likely the second hand part will be working or is there chance it will be a dud? Guess I don’t have a choice haha! Unfortunately I’ll still need to pay the £90 for them to fit it as to get my car removed it would cost £100 :( Very sour lesson this time around !

Thanks again
Drew

Hi Drew,

If they try to charge you £90 to fit it, ask them exactly what their job time and labour rate is - lets be generous and give them 15 min at a scandalous £120 per hour - that's £30!!

It sits at the top front of the engine under the throttle cable quadrant cover. Just one screw for the cover, loosen 2 pipe clips and the retaining bolt - literally 5 mins off and 5 mins on!

S/h ones off of eBay are likely to be fine. Generally, most sellers certify the parts as being in working order.

As above - 10 minutes to change this, tops.

A second-hand part is likely to be working, as these are not common faults on these cars, although they can occasionally get sticky and need to be cleaned.

I hope that's the fault on your car, I'm not particularly optimistic though. Has someone checked/replaced the distributor cap and rotor?

Can I ask the name of the garage ? £90 to fit that valve is scandalous !! I would demand my car back and clean the old valve.

Hi Drew

Do you have the part number for the 850 IACV?

I don't know anything about 850s but the IACV is a pretty simple part.

I wonder if you could plumb in a V70 one? (If the wiring connections are the same).

Just for info the valve for a 1998 V70 is here

https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...valve/1009892/

which shows a 3 pin connector.

Perhaps make sure that all of the pipes are good first?

PS

Skandix lists this for an 850

https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...valve/1039547/

and it looks like a 2 pin connector.

I think Skandix are having trouble delivering to the UK, so don't hold out much hope for getting it from them.

If you can get a Volvo or Bosch part number from your old one, then search for that, you might find that the same (Bosch) part was used on other cars. And look on ebay.

That's same as 940 so you should be able to pick one up easily enough. Like other people have suggested I'd be surprised if that's you problem though.
