newbie needs some help

hi

ive recently purchased a 2001 v40 petrol, manual, 1948cc and have had a couple of problems, everything was fine for a few days then the check engine light came on, took it to my local garage who plugged the gizmo in and identified it was the o2 sensor, that i can live with.
but the last week the gear change has become more and more difficult to engage, almost impossible to get reverse!
i googled it last night and found this forum and the thread with the helpful link about changing the gear lever bushes, was relieved to see its a common fault and not too expeensive!
ive trawled ebay and messaged sellers, searched volvo sites but dont seem to find any bushes that fit my car.
my reverse position is to the right and back, not to the left.
ebentuaally i got hold of snows in poole who were very helpful but a bit confused as they took my reg and couldnt find the right parts, they phoned back after speaking to theyre volvo guru who seemed to think my model had rods not cable? im totally rubbish with cars, so am now confused.. do i still look for bushes or do these rod things need replacing?
i am a decorator and making things look good is my bag, i dont make em work! lol

has anyone got any advice before i take it to the garage?

cheers

Hi

Unfortunately you have posted this in the wrong forum - this is for the new V40 that was released in 2012. Completely different to the "classic" V40 that you have.

However, I used to have a 1999 1.8 V40 and I replaced the gear change bushes on that. Mine had a rod gear change and I got the bushes from my local Volvo dealer. Dead easy to fit and made a world of difference.

I think the cable gear change was used with certain gearboxes (possibly with the GDi version)

Post your question in this forum http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=17 where there are many experts who will be able to put you straight.

Good luck
