Airbag Issue
 

Hi Guys, so my C30 which is a project car had some airbag issues. I honestl don't know the history of the vehicle, so cannot really focus my attention on single thing in regards to the airbag.

When i purchased, there was a SRS warning light on the dashboard, with typical message Airbag service required. Me and my colleague plugged into diagnostic and it comes up with information that airbag module is faulty.
First and foremost i have ordered airbag module with part number: 3129510 - as per ebay seller, this part belongs to my vehicle (passenger airbag cut off version)
When i lifted the tunel cover it showes that my part number (already fitted) is: 30724045. I have give it a go and plugged this module 3129510 anyway just to try. No luck - Airbag lights still on. Returned module, and purchased correct one this time. Plugged the freshly arrived module to my car, same issue. When i started vehicle, airbag light come off so and message, and then appeared again on the dash few seconds later. Plugged into diagnostic computer - and as before i cannot connect to the airbag module. (unavailable).

As obvious things i have checked both 10A fuses by the passenger footwell.

The actual fault code read from the car is really important for airbag faults, without knowing what code is read from it (and preferably with VIDA, rather than a generic code reader), you could end up wasting a lot of time and money fitting parts and/or reprogramming, and still have the fault remaining.

There's a fairly common fault where the data in the module gets corrupted and some of the data logged in the EEPROM needs to be cleared to fix it. This is something that companies like Crashdata can do.

Or it could be an actual hardware fault. Simply replacing the module with a second hand one won't work as they are individually coded to the car, so you need to 'clone' the data from the old one into the replacement. But you need to be sure that the data in the original module is not corrupted, or you will also 'clone' the fault into the new module.

As you have an unknown history with this car, it's even possible that the previous owner could have already tried replacing the module with a second hand one (which will not be coded to the car), and won't have the original codes to clone into a new module, so going to a Volvo dealer for a brand new one may be the only way to fix it.

It certainly make sense what you said, hower airbag module does not give any feedback, simply is not being detected. As much as crash data or previously deployed bag could give any code, this module is not being recognized.
Swapping modules endlesly or sending to reset the airbag data is simply burning money in the barrel i think - where sending to Volvo is suicide mission itself, where budget for bringing this car on the road is tight.

I was wondering if you could explain further where the programming of the module comes to play. After the longer consideration, previous module was tight fitted with bolts, that makes me believe - im dealing with original module being installed in the car.

scanning with vida may show a srs functions seat belt tensioners ect airbags may check out to be ok the srs message can be triggered by low voltage eg bad battery or alternator these types of hard data cannot be erased with diagnostic equipment it will need the eprom chip to be read and the hard code erased crash data in liverpool charge abt £60 for this service visit there facebook site for more info the code will return if the under lieing fault is not rectified talk to them this is there specialist field im fairly shure they will be able to help you

The modules are generic to a number of cars in the model range, but are programmed with the particular configuration parameters for that specific model and the options fitted to that model.

For example the same hardware part number can be used on C30s and C70s, but the C70 has roll over hoops and the sensors and airbags are configured and wired differently.

All of this should not stop the SRS module from communicating though, so it looks like you first need to check for power and communication to the SRS module.

Thank you, precisely i thought it was strange to not to get any feedback from the module. I wonder how safe is to troubleshoot airbags module with key turned in ignition.:confused_smile:

dont mess with it if the air bags deploy you will need new dash air bags an possibly seat belt tensioners . get a professional to diagnose it or it could end up costly:eek:
