"Standard" Wheel Nut Caps
 

2011 R design S40 with Cratus alloys:

Car has "Standard wheel nuts" not the "Bulge Acorn" type (the name according to the handbook).

I have lost 2 wheel nut plastic caps (not the locking ones, the normal ones).

I got some replacements from Volvo main agent but they are too big, a different design and the "silver" colour is way off.

I'm guessing they are for the 'Acorn' nuts, not the standard ones.

The tweezer removal tool I also got from Volvo is hopeless too. The caps I have dont have a front groove to grab onto.

Anybody any ideas where to get Volvo "standard wheel nut" caps from?

the nuts are 17mm.

I remember this potentially coming up previously....

The nuts have an outer cover on that can break off meaning a shiny 19mm nut becomes a duller 17mm.

Do the new nuts actually fit the wheels Ok?

Might help if you upload a photo of old and new.

Edit: A quick check of the owners handbook states for alloy wheels only the acorn nut type should be used.

try parts for volvo tms group i got some for my c70 available in black or chrome. the one for the locking nut is a different size an has a different part no.

On close inspection mine are indeed the domed Acorn type..

The parts guy at Volvo dealer said they come as a complete unit: as Wgl2020 said (thanks) the inner 17mm and the outer 19mm cover.

Parts guy has offered me some replacements for free but I'm thinking about replacing the whole lot as some of the outer covers are loose anyway.

I'm not convinced torquing the wheels with the outer covers on is the ideal method. My 19mm socket is loose on some of them and bloody tight on others.

And some of those 'covers' are already loose.

Seems to me a better method is to torque the wheels with the actual wheel nut then pop a cover on after which can be easily removed with tweezers.

If thats possible..

No experience with that company but they look fine.

I think the issue with the OEM nuts is when an impact gun is used they get vibrated apart. The ones you have linked to won't have that problem.

Those Febi ones do look perfect..

I went to see Volvo parts man again today and he gave me a handful of unused originals he had in stock - free too, which is always a bonus.

You can tell they haven't been 'abused' by impact guns because the little grooves on the front face edges are hardly visible. On mine they are well worn in.

The outers are so tight they are an iffy fit on the 19mm brace from the Volvo toolkit or even a socket.

The design is pretty rubbish all way round I reckon. The newer cars have the more typical type: metal nut and a simple plastic cap outer, tweezer job.

Much easier to torque.

I'm gonna start all over again, with the Febi or try those from alloywheelsandnuts - if their quality looks good.
