crank sensor ?

OK my first post........2004 volvo v50 t5 estate 2.5 petrol, great car but lately has been erratic on starting, will start then stall, have cleaned the MAF but still have the problem, chatting to a mechanic in the pub, he said it sounds like the crank sensor. Can anyone advise if it is ok to attempt this replacement myself.
Can I access after removing the airbox etc ?

Thanks

If it turns over without starting or starts but stalls straight away[but then starts and runs normally]it could be the antenna ring around the ignition barrel. You could try cleaning the electrical contacts on this-you'll have to remove at least the lower part of the plastic steering column shroud behind the steering wheel to get to the connector. Not sure where the crank sensor is on these cars[on my V70 it's on top of the gearbox bellhousing bolted up against the back of the engine]but although access can be a bit tight it's an easily doable D.I.Y. job.
