Geartronic 2012 v50 R design d3
Hi guys I've just brought a 2012 Volvo V50 r design d3 with a GEARTRONIC box, you get a slight jump when selecting drive now I'm not sure but before changing the gearbox I would like to change the gearbox oil is it possible to do so and if so do you think it will help. As I have been told it is a sealed unit and does not need changing and will last the lifetime of the car BUT who is to say that the lifetime of the car is when the gearbox blows up because of 10 year old worn out oil??? DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE ON THE SUBJECT

Same problem a year or so ago. Volvo made a similar claim but relented and happily took my money and did the oil.....
Been 99% fine since! Does an occasional bonk into drive (only drive!) after going over a really nasty drain cover, so something moved/got stuck. Some have tried without success so I guess it's a question of do it and hope, live with it as is (not nice) and how much you want to spend! (I have no garage or drive and am too old to diy it!) Bottom line, if you can do it or have it done and you love the car enough, go for it, it can't hurt! |
Thanks spike to be fair the car has 137000 miles on it and i only payed £1900 for it so dont really want to be spending money on a new box

I took mine to a transmission specialist. Their guy drove around for 45 minutes....... didn't do it once! He suggested the oil change or "just live with it". Volvo don't like doing the change, but will, for around £300.00 iirc.
It's always that gamble isn't it. Fix it at a cost (or it can't be fixed). Or source another vehicle and potentially face the same problems |
Good luck! 🫣

yes the first thing is change the oil and make sure the gearbox software is up to date . then run it for a few days .. If you have just bought it I guess you have bought someone else's problem . if that doesn't help there are other options . see how it goes. |

But…. If you tow or a taxi where it’s a high use box the dealer will service at 52k if memory serves so therefore not sealed for life. The one excuses it’d disturb contaminants in the box and could potentially damage it which just tells me exactly what I said…. They’re not interested full stop. I don’t blame this attitude in Volvo U.K. directly but it’s the Dealers dodging something that’s potentially a risk to them. TT |
