FOR SALE 1996 440
6/12 month MOT (not including government extra 6 month) starts first time every time drives excellent Had loads of work done last year all receipts there, new discs, new water pump time belt, new exhaust much more. Very rare car that still is on the roads today. For more info, pictures etc please drop me a message Newcastle area £895 or very near offer no rush to selling so no silly offers please |
Gentle and well-meant suggestion...don't make prospective buyers work too hard from the off. As your post stands it is a car I might be interested in, but it doesn't tell me colour, trim level, I can't see a registration to look at the MOT history, and I can't even have the most initial view of the car.
I appreciate I could if I contact you, but as a new member you won't be able to PM me back (minimum number of posts needed). Many people won't want to give you personal contact details when only at the stage of a first look... So I'd suggest put up a few more details, plus a few photos - that will catch people's attention far better and greatly improve your chances of selling what is generally a "niche interest" car these days. As I say, no offence intended but just some friendly suggestions. Good luck David |
Hi, thanks for reply...
New to the site I’ll upload some photos ASAP once I figure it out. The registration of the car is ... N391 WJM |

Hi, it won’t let me upload the photos I think their too big for the site or something I’m struggling with this ha do you have an email address I can send them too or a mobile number ?
|
You need to first upload them to an image hosting site. I recommend imgur.
This then generates code that you copy and paste into your post here. |

Take picture. Upload it to your computer. Upload it to the imgur site (others are available) Click on the image and to the right of it will appear a selection of codes Right at the bottom is 'Sizes' select 'Large thumbnail' then copy the code shown at the bottom of the list which is 'Linked BB Code' Paste this into the text of your post. |
I don’t have a computer, I’m using my mobile phone. Thanks for your help anyways 😊 I just thought I’d try sell it to a fellow Volvo enthusiast before the usual selling sites.

Thanks Steven, for both the post and the visitor message.
I have PM'd you with an e-mail address that you could send some photos to if you are willing to. I should add that I am by no means saying I will be buying the car, but I am genuinely interested in it so please don't think I am just wasting your time. Had a quick look at the MOT history - looks pretty good, with the main issue being the perennial battle against rear-end rust which is the Achilles' heel of all 400 series cars. Why Volvo couldn't get that right is beyond me!! Looking at the last fail then pass, I take it that the necessary welding was done in order to secure the pass? Look forward to hearing from you Best David |
So I bit the bullet and took this car on at the end of last week - thanks Stephen, it was a pleasure meeting you!
I wanted another project car and that is exactly what this is - essentially sound but needs quite a bit of tlc and will keep me occupied for a while to come. I will start a thread in the appropriate part of the forum in due course. It's interesting to see just how similar and yet just how different the 440 is to the 480. One thing I do like is the spacious engine compartment - without the different shape of front-end and with no air-conditioning equipment in the way there is soooo much space to play with!! The "other 400s", ie 440 and 460, seem to be so unloved I fear they will become extinct if we don't start trying to save the remaining few, so this is my contribution to that exercise. Hopefully, though, it'll also give me a good and useable car in due course... David |

I still have two 440s (a GLT 2.0i and a 1.9TD), as well as two 460 CD 2.0i's - one manual and one auto. All are projects, but you can restore a car which has sat parked up for years, but not one which has been crushed into a cube in the scrap yard. Good to see another one saved... |
440
Nice to (at last) see some love for the 400s.
I now have a set: an F reg 440 GLT, a G reg 460 Turbo and an L reg 480ES 2.0 R |

Recently, alongside my 480GT (which is never leaving my ownership while I have any say in the matter) I have recently had, done up, and sold on two 480 Celebrations in succession. I've long been mindful that the 440/460 will disappear completely if we don't move now, so needing a new project I thought it would be a nice change. I am very pleased with her - yes, she's had a lot done but yes, she needs a lot doing. I am making steady progress. Eventually she should be a very nice practical car, which I may well keep (I have now started using her as a daily driver). I was only thinking today that I'd still like a turbo in the fleet, and that a 460 Turbo would be ideal. It's good to know I'm not the only one interested in perhaps getting the whole 400 family together! Mind you, if a 480 turbo came along at the right condition/price/time... David |
For those other valiant people - I know you're few but you are out there - that care about the 400 series, I have started a showroom thread for this 440 now I have made some decent progress with her:
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=312215 Steve, if you're still on here, as I promised she is in safe hands... Enjoy! David |
