Battery Xc 70 2010 losing charge
 

Hi, Can someone advise please
I have a XC 70 2010 D5 The Battery 12 v 85A
had a few issues lately with having to charge the battery
Yesterday the car would not start or turn over
Removed the battery and charged overnight
Voltage measured 13.2 with a multi meter
Replaced on the car this morning
Car started first touch , ran for 10 mins stopped and restart no problem
2 hours later car will not start reading 12.6 on multi meter
The battery is 4 years old
Question I think the battery is finished
What is the members thoughts please is 12.6 v too low
Also what recommendations for buying a new battery please

But if your battery has a bad cell, it could still measure a good voltage but collapse under load.

I would measure the voltage with the ignition on (i.e. and lights, heater fan etc.) it drops significantly then it would look like a new battery is needed.

If your car was little used during lockdown, this would appear to have shortened the life of many a healthy battery. As for a new battery, dealers can be surprisingly good value and Volvo batteries are excellent - also try Tayna batteries online but stick with a decent brand like Bosch, Varta, Exide, Yuasa, etc. and always check the specs - often cheaper options (Banner, Lion etc.) have lower capacities (storage - Ah, power - CCA) - you get what you pay for.

I have just been and tested with a multi meter and its dropped to 9.4
So I think a new battery is called for
Will now search for a new battery as advised thank you again

If it drops to 9.4v with the ignition on, after a good charge, it's fugged.

Depening on how urgently you need to use the car, Tayna usually deliver in 48 hours. Bosch S5 seems to be a firm favorite on here, I've also used the Exide options on our commercial and agricultural vehicles and I'm pleased with them (Tractor, Horsebox etc.)

plus one for the bosch battery iv had mine on 6 yrs an still going strong. fully charge your new replacment before fitting and check the alternator output when fitted . a battery optimiser would help if you use your car infrequently .

Did a bit of googling and found my local auto factors did a great deal on Yuasa batteries
delivered this afternoon and took old crap away now running and charging at 14.4 volts
Result had low battery sign for some time, so all sorted now

I'll second/third tayna batteries. Price is at a premium but I did buy 2 AGM specialty batteries for my import truck, which were in stock! Delivered by the next day.

Does your car have auto-start/stop and therefore an AGM battery?

I purchased my 2013 V70 a few weeks ago. After 24 hours, there was a battery warning on the dash. I charged the AGM battery using my AGM charger, and next morning it was warning again. Battery only 3 years old, with a 5 year warranty (no receipt).

I replaced it, and then discovered there is a battery 'reset' procedure. Now forgive me if this is incorrect, but from what I gather, the charging profile is different for an older battery than it is for a new one. If you don't reset the system after installing the new battery, it may not get the full charge cycles it needs.

My working theory is that as the previous owner had Halfords change the battery, the inevitable 12 year old who did it was very unlikely to have reset the Battery Management System... roll on a few years, and the car thinks the installed battery it going for a world record and is not charging it correctly.

It is of course possible that my old battery failed prematurely... but I'm questioning it now.

Just a thought. Folks with more knowledge my correct my understanding, which is basic.

Hi Thank you for the advice the battery would not old a charge
Fully charged it would read 12.6
Within 1 hour down to 10.3
Bought a new battery as the other one was 5 years old
Have done the battery reset as advised and touch wood no further problems
