Strange electrical issues on V70 P3
 

Hi guys

I have a 2012 V70 P3, D5 2.4, 6 speed manual. SE Lux 215 bhp

2 weeks ago I was getting some strange electrical issues happen on my car when driving. When driving with no load on the engine the car would drive as normal but as soon as load was applied on the engine it would cut out with the car going in to limp mode and the EGR light comining on. i carried out basic checks: 12v battery read 12.8v and 14.2v when engine was running so no alternator issues. Took the intake off to check EGR and this was clean and got good movement from it. checked the wiring to the EGR valve and this had a good 12v feed, 0.3ohm ground and signal wiring. I saw online that the CEM can go funny on these cars, so disconnected the connectors and no splayed pins nor any corrosion. As i knew the 12v battery was old and a cheap item to replace i decided to change this and to my suprise it fixed the car for a week. Last week the inhibiter on the gear selector stop working meaning i could select reverse while driving, (this is not good). Stripped the centre console to find its a 2 pin solenoid with 12v feed, confirmed a good ground with 0.2hms and chased the 12v feed wire back to the floor connector on the CEM, unpluged the connector and then reseated it. Powered up the solenoid with 12v feed to confirm this works. connected 12v battery and now the inhibiter is now working again, but now the airbag light is on and it won't go off and I wonder if the CEM is at fault.

Could all of these issues be due to a bad CEM?

Any ideas of what to do next as main deal price per hour is £175 and this could get expensive quickly.

Have you had any leaks? Have you ever had the windscreen replaced, is it factory Volvo stamped? The CEM can go bad because the bonding on the windscreen fails (badly installed from the factory) and lets water in where it shouldn't.
Otherwise I'd have said the battery - you definitely put the correct type in suitable for a start-stop model?

Too complicated a vehicle to not plug it into Vida as used by your main dealer or Volvo Specialist.

You may then at least get fault codes and component lost communication logs.

You could purchase Vida yourself. Forum user Cheshired5 is a good place to go....that said even with the Vida work-throughs you still need to be able to decipher relevant data anomalies. What's your experience of vehicle diagnostics.

Have you suffered the leaking windscreen and associated damp around the CEM in the past ?

Hi, I have checked the windscreen and its not a genuine Volvo one I have owned the car for just over a year but don't have history on this being replaced. I have not found any signs of water in the car at anytime

I am unable to private message on this as I am new, would you be able to ask Cheshired5 to message so I can buy VIDA from him.

I have a good understanding of control units. I worked at VW for 2 years and I'm a Tesla engineer for 3 years but tesla are a lot different to volvo.

Are the issues I have been having CEM related?
