Wanted XC90

Started looking for an XC90, ideally 54 plate, would consider newer. Needs to be good spec, D5 SE at least. Auto.

I currently own a V70 D5 so interested to know how these compare with running costs?

Are the AWD systems problematic? I had an older S70 AWD for a very short while and the system became faulty, made me a little weary. Back then I was told you need to keep all tyres within a few mm of each other to stop faults occuring.

If anyone has a nice example for sale, ideally in the Midlands, please let me know.

I see you have posted on the 06 model for sale.

Regarding the 4x4 early ones used an angle bevel gear. These fail (I believe they wear and accordingly are a when and not if).

The angled Bevel gear is very expensive!!

The later 185 with Auto at £550 a year to tax!!! And like a drop to drink!

The later models use a Haldex 4x4 which should be ok if serviced.

You're conflating two completely different components. All 4wd XC90s make use of a front "angle gear" (or transfer box) and all 4wd XC90s use a Halex unit to control torque delivery to the rear wheels (gen 3 early models, gen 4 on later ones).

There's another set of bevel gears to consider too, in the rear final drive (or rear diff, if you prefer).

All these things can and do wear and some can be expensive if they need to be replaced. That's clearly more likely as they approach 16 years of age.

On MPG, having owned both a 2003 V70 D5 and a 54 plate XC90 D5, I can say with certainty that you're not going to be seeing anything like the fuel economy. My V70 could do 50+ mpg on a run , whereas my XC90 could just about manage mid 30's.
