240 heating controls

Hi all

I'm about to embark on the mammoth job that is replacing the heater fan on my 1989 Volvo 240 estate, but I was wondering if others have the experience of grappling with what seems like the very on-off nature of the hot and cold setting on the heater controls. So if I move the top lever all the way to the left its cold, but I only have to move it to the right by 1 cm and it straightaway goes quite hot. In other words, its either very hot or very cold, there's very little graduation between the two extremes and is quite annoying. Is there something I should check while I have the dash off?

Also, does anyone know where I can find reasonably priced replacement sticker emblems for the 240 wheel trims like in this post below?

Cheers in advance

Here's a thread I did when I replaced my motor blower, you may find it helpful. I think the issue you are referring to is the heater valve adjuster thing, if it's not working I think the Mk1 VW Golf ones from GSF are a almost straight swap

These wheel trim stickers can be printed & made ready to fit by a company producing Vinyl decals. I've had two full sets done previously without any problems (ebay also advertises this service)

Most will do them from a sized picture at very reasonable prices: little need to pay others for the same product.

The originals are on a disc that is glued onto the wheel trim. I removed this and after cleaning up the residue adhesive applied the Vinyl logo direct to the wheel trim.

I did the conversion of the heater valve to the Febi brand VW part as described in this several years ago. There was some modification - shortening the swing arm, and re-adjusting the mounting point for where the cable sheath mounts (this was quite a bit of work involving making a new mounting point and gluing it on, so the part worked exactly like the original).

It would have worked, but it leaked at the pivot - and I ended up having emails with Febi because it was either a dud part or possibly a counterfeit part off ebay. Either way, I couldn't return it to the ebay seller or Febi because by then I'd modified it. But - if it hadn't leaked - it would have been a viable part substitution, given that the VW part was around a tenner.

I ended up using this valve - but it still needed a bit of minor tweaking...

I've got a couple of the previous all-metal valves fitted to older 240s, which I've never got round to pressure testing for leakage, nor to testing the thermostat pipe and coil.
Each time I read a thread on the on/off plastic valves and their problems I resolve to fit a proper old valve that works, but somehow never get round to it.
