244GL 1981 getting back on the road

5 Attachment(s)
Hello All,
im getting my uncles car back on the road his owned it since 1996.
its only been off the road 18 months so nothing to bad. was used for around 500 miles a year before that.

i will have a few questions no doubt it the coming weeks

like where to get the headlight wiper attachments from his missing one.
also how do these operate and run ? cant seem to find a switch for them inside the car.

another question would be, its got some scratches and small dents and some paint work needs fixing, do i just treat those areas or is it worth a respray or is that something i shouldn't do as the its the cars original paint work ?
would this decrease its value.

car is from 1981, 2.1 petrol

Hello, 'dmw244gl'. On all of our 240s, the headlamp wash-wipe worked in conjunction with the windscreen wash-wipe - there was no separate switch.

I'm afraid that I can't help you with your other queries, but I'm sure someone will.

Good luck with recommissioning your car - it looks a very worthwhile project. I think if it were me, I would want to preserve the patina of 40 years - a car is only original once - but I don't know what effect this would have on it's value.

Regards, John.

I'd try your local Volvo dealer for service items like headlamp wiper blades. Volvo part number 274434. Last time I bought a pair they were pretty cheap.

Or FRF Volvo dealers in Swansea do mail order and give a huge discount if you mention you're from the Volvo owners Club forum - discount code C3. https://www.frfvolvo.co.uk/

Brookhouse are a good parts source for older Volvos - https://classicvolvoparts.co.uk/sear...&Submit=Search

Finally, Skandix (in Germany) - they normally sell original Volvo parts, or aftermarket. They seem to only have aftermarket at present.

As John said, the headlamp wash system operates automatically every time you wash the windscreen, so don't leave it too long without a headlamp wiper blade as you'll scratch the headlamp.

Good luck with your new car - the early 80s facelift 240s are quite rare now and have some nice features not present on later cars.

Regards
Lucien

Good morn,
That looks like a nice car - similar i many ways to the Royal Barge (1980 model).
I have not found parts not available via the internet (mostly eBay and Amazon) so far.
With a project like this it is (in my opinion) important to understand one's aim at the outset. If your intention is to maximise the value of the car then that would be very different from a rolling restoration to drive yourself. With the RB I've made no pretence at a restoration and quite like the 40 years worth of history it wears.
Good fortune,
Alan

PS. There is a short piece about fixing the RB's headlamp wipers here:

PPS. These are the same as the headlamp wiper blades I bought a year ago (the price has increased by a pound or two):

What a fantastic project! The body work issue is largely up to you. If you want something to look new then pump the cash in and accept you will not see all of it back.

For me personally provided there are no structural damages I would love to see the patina of ‘genuine’ fresh Volvo paint with a bit of bash here and there.

It’s a really stunning looking car, well done!!

Just an update so far,

given the car a service.
cambelt, waterpump , plugs and oil, sorted timing out,

and replaced the faulty water pump and got it taxed and on the road.

just need to find a carb repair kit for it now and one adapter to get a headlight wiper blade back on the car, got 3 spare wipers just no adapter to attach it on.

Super! Well done. This time net year the motor car will be tax exempt, which is another bonus.

What is wrong with the carburettor?

... I just noticed that Brookhouse Parts sells a service kit for 175CD carburettors - part number BCRKCD175US at £45.36, see this page:
